Vermont’s Mountains are an invaluable natural resource that must be protected and conserved. Peak Keepers, under the auspices of Vermonters for a Clean Environment, is an ad hoc working group of scientists, educators, and advocates focused on protecting and promoting the integrity of Vermont’s mountains and their environmental, cultural, and economic value. Learn more about the mission of Peak Keepers.

Vermonters benefit from a multitude of resources and processes that are supplied by the state’s natural mountain ecosystems. Collectively these benefits include:

  • Production of food and wood resources
  • Wildlife and wildlife habitat
  • Regulation of climate and nutrient and water cycles
  • Cultural heritage and spiritual and recreational experiences

The extraordinary worth of Vermont’s mountains has not been and cannot be quantified by traditional means. When value as significant, vital resources upon which all life depends is taken into account, the importance of mountain ecosystems is evident and protecting them becomes paramount.
